When I was in college friend said that a cold is misplaced crying and I noticed that whenever I got a cold, it was true. I was feeling sad, or “out-of-sorts”. More recently, I have read Abraham saying that any lack of energy shows a resistance to connection to Source/Universe/Divinity. Illness, he adds, is caused by ignoring negative emotion and continuing to focus on the ideas that caused the negative emotion. This, of course, brings about more negative thoughts. Negative thoughts are resistance to our connection to Source.
As a child, I used to stay home from school when I was feeling low energy, or “out-of-sorts”. I would feign a sore throat or a stomach ache and usually, my Mom would allow me to stay home without further explanation. Since I loved reading, I would do this most of the day which allowed me to connect with some wonderful story that made me happy. Sometimes I would also draw or write as those were also fabulous pastimes for me.
After one day home, I was always “cured”. My energy was restored and my enthusiasm. I was reconnected to my Source and to my soul’s purpose. And, my mother always gave me chicken noodle soup. (The special attention from Mom didn’t hurt either.) As an adult, people sometimes call these “mental health days”. Perhaps you have taken one or two yourself?
Now we know that our mental health is directly connected to our physical health, so these days are preventive if you actually use them for fun and restoration. Whatever you do, don’t use them to stress over taking a day off!
Epigenetics
It has been scientifically proven that your genes do not cause your sicknesses or disability. Your emotional state affects your cells and your brain. When your brain is happy, it sends resources to the front part of your brain (necessary for cognitive functions), to your digestive system (necessary for growth and development) to your immune system and to your sexual system. When you are stressed your brain sends resources to the back of your brain (necessary for fight or flight) and to your muscles and bones, but not to your digestion, immune system or sexual system.
The lack of resources when you are stressed, causes genetic changes in the neglected systems. This is epigenetics in a nutshell.
Dr. Bruce Lipton, cellular biologist, has been the Town Crier of epigenetics. His books and videos illustrate just how this happens on a cellular level. He first noticed it when he took a malignant cancer cell and put it in a petri dish for careful study. Much to his surprise, the cell normalized in a short period of time.
So, what did this mean? It meant that it was not the genetics present in the cell that were causing the cancer, it was the environment, the body that the cell was living in that caused the cancer. Once the cell was removed to a healthy environment (the petri dish) it was no longer acting like a sick, cancerous, cell.
This is critical for us to understand because it explains the process of illness. First, you create an unhealthy environment with your thoughts, then your brain re-assigns resources, and then your cells respond by acting in an unhealthy way.
Restoring Your Health
What can we do if we are stressed by our jobs, and by the idea of not having a job, and stressed by our families, and by the idea of not having a family, and stressed by the pressures of global warming and worldwide economic collapse, and by the idea of socialism or increased government power or fascism/corporatism and on and on? There is so much to be stressed about, what really can we do to stop it?
We use the word, dis-ease, for a good and clear reason. Change the picture as quickly as you can. Turn off the news if you need to do that, and many will. Because what does the news show you? It shows war and violence. It shows the economy as something outside of your power (unless you are a member of the Fed or Central Bank or World Bank or a member of the Stock Exchange) and it shows the most dire world events. So, turn off the news for at least a week.
A meditation program has been shown to move resources back to your cognitive functions, to restore healthy blood pressure, and to restore resources to your health promoting systems and to normalize resources to your fight or flight systems. In other words, it reduces stress and your physiological responses to stress.
For this program, particularly if you have been stressed for a while, we recommend any graduated program of binaural beats which has proven to increase the building of neurons in areas of the brain needed to cope with stress, and any guided meditations which are exhilarating and positive. You want guided meditations which will help you to reconnect with Source/Divinity/Universe. We found several to be helpful in restoring a positive outlook on life.
And, make this a daily practice. You will have to balance the years you spent stressing your self and your body, but it can easily be done. Silva Method recommends two 15 minute sessions per day.
